The other an, 37 , thought, “Life is precious. I have to live it to the fullest and cherish every oent of it.” So he lived his life in gratitude, 38 every oent he has with his loved ones. What a big difference that ade!
Nothing has eaning except the eaning you give it. You are responsible for giving eaning to everything that has happened in your life. So, the question is, would you rather be like the first war veteran who lived his life with 39 , anger and fear? Or would you rather be like the second, who saw the lessons the war had 40 hi and created a ore epowering eaning for it?

Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six onths old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life.
Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environent. They say a baby will sile if her other does soething the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by siling to please her other or other caregiver. This is how babies learn to connect and counicate with other huan beings.
One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stoach of a pregnant woan. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attepted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his other. They did this by placing a device in the outh of the newborn baby.
The baby would hear the story if he oved his outh one way. If the baby oved his outh the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would ove his outh so he could hear the story again and again.
Another study shows how others can strongly influence social developent and language skills in their children.
Researchers studied the children fro the age of one onth to three years. The researchers attepted to easure the sensitivity of the others. The woen were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language developent when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the woen for signs of depression.
The children of depressed woen did not do as well in tests as the children of woen who did not suffer fro depression. The children of depressed woen did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.
These children also were less cooperative and had ore probles dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the others was iportant to the intelligence developent of their children. Children did better when their others were caring, even when they suffered fro depression.

“Luck is a atter of preparation for eeting opportunity,” said the Aerican talk show host Oprah Winfrey. I’ve never watched her show, but when a self-ade billionaire gives life advice it’s probably worth listening to.
Her point is that blind luck is very rare. You ay have to be lucky to find a good job these days but that does not ean you should sit at hoe waiting for the opportunity to coe to you. If you’re a Chinese, you ay already be failiar with the tale of a farer waiting by a tree stup(树桩) for a rabbit to run out and break its neck.
A book by the UK psychologist Richard Wisean, called The Luck Factor, argues we can all ake ourselves luckier. It’s not about going to a teple to burn soe incense(香)and hopes that the gods will give you good fortune; it’s practical advice you can follow each day.
Wisean conducted an experient as part of his studies. First he divided volunteers into two groups; those who said they were lucky in life and those who said they were not. He gave everyone a newspaper and asked the to look through it to count how any photographs it had inside. On average, the unlucky people took about two inutes to count the photographs while the lucky people tooust seconds. Why? On the second page of the newspaper, a coand, “Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper,” was written in big letters. The unlucky people ostly did not spot the essage.
It’s easy to copare this situation to a young person looking for jobs in a local paper. They ight search so hard for one type of position that they iss an even better opportunity. People who are “lucky”, in fact, keep an open ind and don’t go through the sae routine every day.
I first cae to China in 2002 when it was considered a rather strange thing to do. Like any foreigners, y plan was to teach English for one year. Seven years later, and still here, I’ve had any great opportunities such as writing for newspapers and agazines. I did not drea these would have been possible. I’ve also never been sick, had an accident, got into a fight or had probles with the police. Coincidence? After reading about Professor Wisean’s studies I think not.
As Wisean advises, I usually trust y own judgent. Your friends and parents ay give you advice based on rational thinking, but it’s iportant to consider how you feel about each choice you ake. Your feeling acts as a warning for a potential proble.
Finally, try to turn bad luck into good. Even if you do fall down and break a leg, the tie spent at hoe can be used wisely to study English.
49. Which of the following proverbs ost agrees with the writer’s point?

Then Brunswick was ten iles, and then five. Then, suddenly, all of the young people were up out of their seats, shouting and crying.
Vingo sat there astonished, looking at the oak. It was covered with yellow handkerchiefs — 20 of the, 30 of the, aybe hundreds, flying in the wind. As the young people shouted, Vingo slowly rose fro his seat and ade his way to the front of the bus to go hoe.
