Nearly everyone is shy in some ways. If shyness is making you uncomfortable, it may be time for a few lessons in self-confidence. You can build your confidence by following some suggestions from doctors and psychologists.
Make a decision not to hold back in conversations. What you have to say is just as important as what other people say. And don’t turn down party invitations just because of your shyness.
Prepare for yourself for being with others in groups. Make a list of the good qualities you have. Then make a list of ideas, experiences, and skills you would like to share with other people . I think about what you would like to say in advance. Then say it.
If you start feeling self-conscious in a group, take a deep breath and focus your attention on other people, Remember, you are not alone. Other people are concerned about the impression they are making, too.
No one ever gets over being shy completely, but most people do learn to live with their shyness. Even entertainers admit that they often feel shy. They work at fighting their shy feelings so that they can face the cameras and the public. Just making the effort to control shyness can have many rewards. But perhaps the best reason to fight shyness is to give other people a chance to know about you.

A new plan for getting children to and from school is being started by a local government in Eastern England. This could end many parents’ worries fearful for their children’s safety on the roads.
Until now the local government have only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will attend their nearest school.
The new plan is to be fired out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three-mile limit and the local government said in the past that they would not undertake to provide free transport to the school . But now they have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school’s headmaster. Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part . Final calculations have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should be less than £20 a term. They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington . The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in had asked if transport could be provided for their children , to see if they would like to take part in the new plan.

Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something that has not been said before. He hopes that the public will listen and understand ----he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him.
What visional artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experience into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain choice of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is very interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have notice these particular shapes and colors ,or have felt the delight which they brought to the artists.
Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in movement and at rest; their choices show that these aspects(方面)of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Modern artists might say that they only choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose totally without thinking about the character of their subjects.
If one painter chooses to paint a decaying(溃烂的) leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world . Each painter is telling us something , showing us something , emphasizing something----- all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.
44. It is hard to explain what a painter is saying because _______.
A. most painters do not express themselves well
B. a painter uses unusual words and phrases
C. a painter use shapes and colors instead of words
D. many painters do not say anything
45. Modern artists might say their choice of subjects ______.
A. carries a message to the public B. only provides interesting patterns
C. has no pattern or form D. teaches the public important truths
46. The writer says that modern art contains______
A. nothing but meaningless patterns B .uninteresting aspects of the world
C. subjects chosen partly for their meaning D. completely meaningless subjects
47. Which of the following is implied but NOT directly stated in the passage?
A. A painting is more easily understood than a song
B. Art is only the arranging of shapes and colors
C. Every artist tries to say something to the public
D. One must look beyond shapes and colors to find out what an artist is saying
D.
How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments-mostly for entertainment purposes-is fair and respectful?
Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats(栖息地). Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.
Zoos claim(声称) to educate people and save endangered species(物种), but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range(分布区). The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.
The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusually and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats. Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.
48.How would the author describe the animals’ life in zoos?
A.Dangerous.B.Unhappy.C.Natural.D.Easy.
49.In the state of zoochosis, animals _________.
A.remain in cagesB.behave strangely
C.attack other animalsD.enjoy moving around
50.What does the author try to argue in the passage?
A.Zoos are not worth the public support.
B.Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.
C.Zoos should treat animals as human
D.Zoos use animals as a means of making money.
51.The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by _________.
A.pointing out the faults in what zoos do. B.using pictures he has taken at zoos
C.questioning the way animals are protected
D.discussing the advantages of natural habitats

Dear editor,
I am writing to tell you about the discussion we’ve had about the relationship between economic development and environment protection.
Some students believe we should never sacrifice environment for economy. They think the present environmental problems are largely caused by rapid economic development. For example, farmable land is decreasing because of the industrial development and the development of cities.
However, other students think it unnecessary to consider environmental problems now and economic development comes first. They believe that environmental problems are only the by-products of economic development, which are unavoidable. They can be dealt with later when we have the time and money.
I think the second view is completely wrong. The purpose of economic development is to provide a comfortable and happy life for our people. We should aim at sustainable development and a balance between the two.
Yours,
Li Hua
