三、理解 (共20小题; 每小题2分, 满分40分)
A
I took my dog, Phil, to the vet’s (兽医诊所) yesterday. When the doctor came into the room, he was limping (跛行).
“What’s wrong?” I said. “Oh, it’s my knee. They want me to really appreciate the operation I’m about to have, so they delayed it another month, so I would suffer more,” he replied.
It was then for the first time I actually showed my scar to someone. “Look, I had an operation on my arm.” My wife has been telling me that it really didn’t look bad. It healed very nicely. When I showed it to the doctor and his assistant, they said, “That’s terrible!”
That’s when I discovered something.
“Doctor, when I was a kid, I fell. I remember showing the scar to all my friends because I thought it was ‘cool’. Having a scar at that age was like having a battle injury.”
“Then I went into the young adulthood and vanity (虚荣心) took over. I was in a band and never wanted anything to scar my beautiful face. Now, at 59, I just joined that group of older folks who are proud to compare operations, aches and pains,” I said struggling to get it out without laughing.
The winner is the one who is in the worst shape, I guess. Then there are those at any age, who use their scars as an excuse. The kind of excuse holds them back, limits them and provides a crutch for why they aren’t happy. “Too short”... “too fat”... “my family”... “ever since we had children” and so on.
All scars never heal because we keep picking at (扯拉) them. I promised I’d never do that, yet today I didn’t even hesitate to show the doctor my scar. It’s okay. I see it as returning to my childhood. What scars do you have?

After a disabled woman’s cat started a house fire, her specially trained dog came to the rescue and then died when trying to help the cat still in the house, Jamie Hanson said the 13-year-old dog named Jesse, brought the phone so she could call 911 and also brought her artificial leg.
“She got me outside and then she heard the cat upstairs and went up there to get the cat out but she wouldn’t come back to me,” Hanson, 49, said at a news conference at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center where she was being treated for her injuries.
“She received third-degree burns on an arm in the fire at her home,” the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department said, adding that both pets died in the fire.
Hanson, who lost a leg in a car accident three years ago, said she was on the couch watching television when the cat ran over the back of the couch.

Hanson said she fell off the couch and was unable to get her artificial leg from the table. “So my dog got my leg for me and went to get the phone and brought it to me, so I could call 911.”
She said she tried to put the prosthetic leg on, but it was too hot, and the dog, a German shepherd, came to her aid again before going back inside for the cat.

Mother Teresa, whose name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, was born on August 26th, 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia. She always wrote her birthday as 27th of August because it was the day of her baptism (洗礼), which was always more important to her than her birthday. For her work with the poor around the world, she received the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.
In 1928, she accepted a religious order and took the name Teresa. The order immediately sent her to India. A few years later, she began teaching in Calcutta. In 1948 the Catholic (天主教的) Church agreed her request and let her enter the convent (女修道院) and she began to work for the poor people. She became an Indian citizen in the following year. In 1950, she set up a religious organization in Calcutta. The organization provided food for the poor people and then she set up hospitals, schools, youth centers, and homes for the sick and the dying poor. It now has branches in 50 Indian cities and 30 other countries.

Rather than talk about how he feels, often a man would express his love by buying the woman cosmetics (化妆品), or bringing home a flower, or giving up the control of the remote (遥控器).
And when men do talk, they’d prefer to talk about actions rather than emotions. For example, a lot of men would choose to express their long-range faith in a relationship by talking about next summer’s vacation plans, not by starting a conversation about undying love.
Men just prefer to say their plans with plane tickets, rather than poetry. It’s one of the reasons why men are more comfortable talking at work (the practical world) than they are at home (the castle that emotion built). But you can bring out his great communicator by making him feel more like he’s operating in the work mode, even when the topic at hand is your love life.
When men talk less and women want more, the conflict can escalate. Like when a policeman is questioning an unwilling witness, more silence equals more questions. A full 65 percent of men we surveyed recently told us that they don’t want their partners to ask them more questions about themselves.
It’s clear that some men are just tired of feeling like they’re on the witness stand. They’re not necessarily hiding anything; many men simply prefer not to have to tell confusing feelings that they may not even understand themselves.
An age-old method can make things better: back off a little, give him room to operate in a conversation, and he’s more likely to open up.

第一节 表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
Do you find your teen has a hard time finding new friends? More importantly, do you think your teen has settled in with the first friends that came along despite the friends’ questionable quality?
Making new friends can be quite nerve-racking for a teen, especially if he/she has low self-esteem and confidence levels. Finding friends with similar values can be even more challenging.
Parents play an important role in their children’s lives. You need to teach your kids on how to pick the “right friends”.
1. Sign your teen up for 1 or 2 extracurricular activities. It can be a sports team, an art class, or a dance class. Pick something he/she would enjoy or ask your teen to pick the class he/she would like to participate in. This way you give your teen power to choose what he/she wants to do. The point is your teen cannot make friends if he/she has no place to meet new people.
2. Guide him or her on how to ________. For example: Teach your teen to carefully choose his or her friends. Direct your teen to ask himself or herself what he/she is looking for in new friends. Get your teen to write down 5 qualities or characteristics he/she would like the new friends to have.
3. Encourage your teen to think about how he/she wants his or her friends to influence him or her. Ask him or her to think of 5 ways he/she would like to be influenced. Ask him or her how she would not like to be influenced.
Teens are a very special part of our society. They are our tomorrow! Today, it is up to us to inspire them to be all that they can be!
